Yerin Ha Joins Bridgerton as Lady in Silver: Get Ready for a Magical Love Story
Yerin Ha joins Bridgerton as Sophie Baek, Benedict’s love interest in Season 4.

The Lady in Silver Steps Into Benedict’s Heart

The Bridgerton universe is expanding in Season 4, with a new love interest taking center stage. Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) will meet his match in Sophie Baek, previously known only as the mysterious Lady in Silver. Played by Yerin Ha, Sophie is a maid with a complex past and a future full of intrigue, secrets, and love. Sophie’s entrance into the ton will mark the start of an unforgettable romance, set against the backdrop of Violet Bridgerton's grand masquerade ball.

But who exactly is Sophie Baek, and what makes her the perfect match for Benedict? In a new interview, Ha shares her thoughts on the role, the upcoming ball, and the deep connections she feels with her character. Read on to discover more about Sophie and the exciting future of Bridgerton Season 4.

Sophie Baek: A Mysterious and Complicated Character

Sophie is no ordinary debutante. Unlike the usual socialites paraded before Benedict, she carries a history marked by hardship and resilience. Sophie’s character is deeply layered, with her journey revolving around overcoming obstacles, particularly those tied to her social status. “What drew me to Sophie was that she immediately has obstacles — something that she constantly has to overcome,” Yerin Ha reveals. "Whether it’s the battle around social status or trying to hide her feelings from Benedict, she’s constantly struggling with something."

As a maid, Sophie has worked for a demanding employer in the ton, enduring years of mistreatment. However, her strength and resourcefulness shine through as she rises above her circumstances. Sophie’s path to Benedict begins at Violet Bridgerton's highly anticipated masquerade ball, where she hides behind a mask to meet him for the first time. This iconic ball, featured in Bridgerton’s upcoming season, is inspired by An Offer from a Gentleman, the third book in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series.

The Masquerade Ball: Where Masks and Magic Collide

At the heart of Sophie and Benedict’s story is the masquerade ball. The ball serves as the perfect backdrop for Sophie’s emotional journey, as she hides her true identity and struggles with her feelings for Benedict. According to Ha, the theme of masks plays a pivotal role in her portrayal of Sophie. “There’s this theme with masks that was running throughout all of my audition scenes,” Ha says. "When does Sophie put on this mask to cover her emotions? Or when does she take it off and soften up? Playing with those questions is just really fun.”

Both Ha and Thompson have been hard at work preparing for the ball, including practicing their dance moves. Thompson shared a humorous moment from their rehearsals, saying, “I’ve only stepped on Yerin’s toes once, which is good.” The dancing, according to Ha, is more than just a physical act—it’s a form of emotional connection for Sophie and Benedict. “The dancing is like an extension of their emotions, and a way for them to connect,” she explains.

A Name Change with Meaning: Sophie Baek’s Cultural Roots

One particularly meaningful aspect of Sophie’s character is her name. In a thoughtful nod to Ha’s Korean heritage, Sophie’s surname has been changed from “Beckett” to “Baek.” Ha reflects on the significance of this change, saying, "A name is the first bit of identity that you share with the world, and that’s why changing a name can be so powerful." The character’s new surname connects Sophie more authentically to Ha’s own identity, which made her feel even more connected to the role.

The decision to change the name came from Jess Brownell, the showrunner of Bridgerton, who asked Ha about Korean surnames beginning with the letter “B.” The result was “Sophie Baek,” a name Ha finds empowering. “It means a lot that Jess did that for me,” she adds. “It’s amazing what it can do just in a psychological sense.”

Yerin Ha: From Halo to Bridgerton

Though Bridgerton marks Ha’s first appearance in the period drama genre, she’s no stranger to the screen. Ha is best known for her role in the Steven Spielberg–produced Halo, where she starred for two seasons. She also has a role in the upcoming Dune prequel series, Dune: Prophecy. Despite her impressive resume, Ha admits that joining the Bridgerton family was initially “nerve-racking,” especially as she stepped into the show in its fourth season.

However, Ha quickly found her footing among her new co-stars, all of whom have welcomed her with open arms. “I was stressing over nothing because everybody has truly welcomed me with open arms,” she says. Ha mentions how Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Bridgerton), and Hannah Dodd (Francesca Stirling) reached out to her before they even met, which made her feel supported and valued.

“They were like, ‘Hey, reach out if you ever need anything.’ For someone just coming into the show, that means so much,” Ha shares. “It’s so sweet. I feel so fortunate and grateful to be part of such a family.”
