Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson have joined forces to create the People’s Fund of Maui, a vital initiative aimed at providing assistance to those affected by the devastating wildfires on the island. The fund, kickstarted with a generous $10 million donation from Winfrey and Johnson, seeks to offer direct financial aid to families and individuals grappling with the aftermath of the wildfires.
In the wake of the Maui wildfires, Winfrey expressed her commitment to making a meaningful impact in the community. She stated, “I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service.” She continued, “The main thing I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the immense financial burden. The community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”
The People’s Fund of Maui is designed to provide much-needed relief to the residents of Lahaina and Kula, the areas most severely affected by the wildfires. Every adult aged 18 and over residing in these regions is eligible to receive financial assistance in the form of $1,200 per month during this critical recovery period.
Dwayne Johnson, also known as “The Rock,” expressed his gratitude for the resilient spirit of the Maui community in the face of adversity. He stated, “As people around the world watched the catastrophic loss and devastation caused by the Maui wildfires, they also witnessed the great spirit and resilience of our Polynesian culture and the tremendous strength of the people of Maui.”
Johnson emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in overcoming challenges, saying, “Even in the most difficult of times, the people of Maui come together, and we rise – that’s what makes us stronger.” He further extended his appreciation to the local first responders, organizations, and individuals who have been tirelessly working on the ground to respond to the crisis.
The People’s Fund of Maui was established with the guidance of community leaders, elders, and residents who understand the unique needs of the affected areas. These individuals, including Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, Keali’i Reichel, Archie Kalepa, Ekolu Lindsey, and others, have played a pivotal role in ensuring that the fund can swiftly provide financial support to those who need it most.
Both Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson encourage others to contribute to this ongoing relief effort, emphasizing the importance of community support during times of crisis. Their generous donation serves as a beacon of hope for the Maui community as they embark on the path to recovery.
As the People’s Fund of Maui extends its helping hand to those in need, it serves as a testament to the resilience and solidarity of the people of Maui, who come together in the face of adversity to rebuild and rise stronger than before.
