Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson confirmed to WTVA that a helicopter crashed on State Park Road on Tuesday night. The incident occurred on private property east of Plantersville.
The helicopter involved in the crash belonged to the pilot. According to Sheriff Johnson, the pilot was en route from Tupelo Regional Airport to his residence when the helicopter went down into a private lake.
Fortunately, the pilot managed to swim ashore with non-life-threatening injuries. However, as a precautionary measure, he was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Medics expressed concerns about the cold water causing numbness, potentially masking any injuries.
The name of the pilot is expected to be released by the sheriff’s office on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the crash.
