Extreme Flooding Forces State of Emergency in Orange and Ontario counties.
Two counties are under a state of emergency, according to Governor Kathy Hochul. Orange and Ontario counties are those in question.In the counties of Orange, Westchester, Ulster, Putnam, Dutchess, and Rockland, there are still road closures in effect. Additionally, Metro-North Services are not operating on the Hudson and Harlem lines’ northern segments. 5,500 people live without electricity.
In some places, more than eight inches of rain had poured in the last 24 hours, according to a release. “On the instruction of Governor Hochul, the State Emergency Operations Centre and State Fire Operations Centre were activated by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services on Sunday to support local requests for assistance. In order to support local efforts to deal with flash floods in both the Mid-Hudson and Finger Lakes regions, additional State agencies dispatched staff and equipment.

New York is “in the middle of a dangerous 48 hours, where extreme weather conditions have put much” of the state at risk, according to the governor. “I have declared a State of Emergency for Orange and Ontario Counties, where flooding last night made significant damage,” Hochul said. “While the storm has already passed through the southern part of New York, conditions remain dangerous in further north where there are ongoing extreme weather conditions. I urge all New Yorkers to remain vigilant, monitor local forecasts and have an evacuation plan ready if you’re in a danger zone.”
The American Red Cross has set up two shelters at the Canandaigua Town Hall, located at 5440 Route 5 and 20 West in Canandaigua, and the Sacred Heart School, located at 7 Cozzens Avenue in Highland Falls. According to a release, the State Department of Transportation is keeping an eye on the weather and taking appropriate action.
