STORYLINE

After House Atreides is destroyed by House Harkonnen, Princess Irulan, daughter of Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, privately expresses her discontent over her father’s betrayal of the Atreides. On Arrakis, Stilgar’s Fremen fighters, including Paul Atreides and his pregnant Bene Gesserit mother, Lady Jessica, defeat a Harkonnen patrol. Upon reaching Sietch Tabr, some Fremen suspect Jessica and Paul as spies, while others interpret their arrival as a fulfillment of a prophecy foretelling the arrival of a mother and son from beyond Arrakis.

Stilgar informs Jessica that Sietch Tabr’s Reverend Mother is dying and Jessica must take her place by ingesting the Water of Life, a poison lethal to males and untrained women. Jessica survives the poison, gaining the memories of past Reverend Mothers, and establishes a psychic connection with her unborn daughter, Alia. Chani and her friend Shishakli initially doubt the prophecy but develop respect for Paul after he pledges to fight alongside the Fremen, not to dominate them.

Paul and Chani fall in love as Paul embraces Fremen customs: mastering their language, becoming a Fedaykin warrior, riding sandworms, and attacking Harkonnen spice operations. Due to ongoing spice raids, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen replaces his nephew Rabban with his more cunning yet psychotic nephew, Feyd-Rautha. Lady Margot Fenring evaluates Feyd-Rautha for his potential as a Kwisatz Haderach.

As Jessica joins Fremen fundamentalists in the south, Paul remains in the north, fearing his visions of a holy war will come true if he becomes their messiah. During a spice harvester raid, Paul reunites with Gurney Halleck and discovers House Atreides’ hidden atomic arsenal. Feyd-Rautha devastates the northern Fremen, prompting Paul and survivors to head south. Paul drinks the Water of Life, falls into a coma, and is awakened by Chani’s tears mixed with the liquid.

Now possessing foresight, Paul envisions Alia on Arrakis and plots a path to victory. He also learns Jessica is the Baron’s daughter. Paul rallies southern Fremen, reveals his telepathic abilities, and challenges Shaddam. The Fremen overwhelm the Sardaukar, and Paul captures Shaddam. Gurney kills Rabban, and Paul demands to marry Irulan, despite Chani’s objections. The Great Houses arrive, and Paul threatens to destroy spice fields if they interfere. Paul defeats Feyd-Rautha in a duel and accepts Irulan’s marriage proposal to spare her father. Shaddam surrenders, and when the Great Houses reject Paul, he orders the Fremen to attack. Stilgar leads the assault, while Jessica and Alia contemplate Paul’s holy war. Chani, refusing to submit to Paul, leaves on a sandworm.
