Israel will go to the polls as the coalition moves to dissolve parliament

After its fractured coalition government concluded that it could not survive, Israel is set to hold its fifth general election in less than four years.

Under an existing agreement, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will swap places with Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid in a major political development.

According to observers, an election could take place in October.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the former prime minister and current opposition leader, has vowed to run for office again.

The announcement on Monday comes after weeks of speculation that the coalition, the most diverse in Israeli history, was on the verge of collapsing.

It faces a crucial vote next week after a member of Mr Bennett’s own Yamina party quit the coalition, leaving it with a minority in the 120-seat Knesset (parliament).
