Heathrow flight cancellations have impacted 5,000 people

Heathrow Airport has cancelled approximately 30 flights carrying up to 5,000 passengers due to baggage-related technical issues.

On Monday, the airport requested that airlines cut 10% of their flights from terminals two and three.

It comes after images of luggage piling up high at baggage reclaim areas surfaced last week.

In other news, EasyJet announced plans to cut 7% of its 160,000 scheduled flights between July and September.

The move comes after Gatwick, EasyJet’s main airport, announced that due to staff shortages, it will reduce the number of flights departing from its airport during the peak summer season.

In recent weeks, airport disruption and flight cancellations have impacted tens of thousands of passengers.

According to the BBC, some airlines may be able to combine flights at Heathrow, ensuring that some passengers’ flights will not be delayed.

Heathrow stated that reducing flight numbers would “minimise” the impact of technical issues affecting baggage systems.

“We apologise unreservedly for the disruption passengers have faced over the course of this weekend,” the company said.

British Airways, which operates from terminals three and five, told the BBC that the airport’s request resulted in a “small number of cancellations.”

It is expected that BA will be able to re-book the vast majority of customers onto new flights.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled across the UK during the week of the Platinum Jubilee and half-term holidays, and fears have been raised about further travel problems this summer.

Several factors have contributed to the disruption, but staff shortages have left the aviation industry struggling to meet resurgent demand.
