Instagram introduces new parental controls in the UK

On June 14, Instagram owner Meta will roll out new parental controls across the platform in the United Kingdom.

They include the ability to set daily time limits ranging from 15 minutes to 2 hours, after which the app displays a black screen.

Parents can also schedule break times and see which accounts their children report and why.

Furthermore, the tech behemoth is deploying a parent dashboard on all Quest virtual reality headsets worldwide.

Parents can now invite their children to use the supervision tools, which were previously only available to the young person.

Purchase approval, app blocking, and the ability to view their child’s friend lists are among the new VR controls.

Another Instagram feature being tested is a “nudge” tool that prompts teens to search for different topics if they keep searching for the same thing.

Instagram tools were introduced in the United States in March.

Instagram is intended for young people aged 13 and up, and Meta claims its Oculus VR content is also intended for teens and up – though younger children use both platforms.

Following a backlash, Instagram halted plans to create an Instagram platform for children under the age of 13.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Meta, which owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, conducted research that found teenagers blamed Instagram for increased feelings of anxiety and depression – and then kept the study secret.
