Marvel Studios has confirmed that a live-action Thunderbolts film will be made, with Jake Schreier scheduled to direct the MCU picture. Since the end of the Infinity Saga, the MCU has gone in a number of different directions, with returning heroes and villains as well as the introduction of previously unknown characters from the Marvel Universe. Marvel Studios has been able to flesh out some of the older characters while also presenting the new generation of superheroes and villains thanks to Disney+ as an extra platform. While the MCU has adopted several legendary teams into the Avengers-based universe, there is one that has been rumoured to make its live-action debut for quite some time. The MCU has appeared to be setting up the Thunderbolts, which is effectively Marvel’s equivalent of the Suicide Squad, during the previous few Phases.

The Thunderbolts focuses on Marvel Universe villains that are going to the dark side, as well as antiheroes. After years of speculation, Marvel Studios is finally embracing the Thunderbolts, with Deadline reporting that a live-action feature is in the works. Jake Schreier, whose credits include Robot & Frank, Beef, and Dave, will direct the Thunderbolts film, which will be written by Black Widow screenwriter Eric Pearson. Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has been rehired as an executive producer. Thunderbolts currently has no cast members attached because the project is still under production.

While it will most likely be some time before Thunderbolts begins casting, there are already several canonical members in the MCU from which they can choose. Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is primarily an Avenger, although in the comics, he was a member of the Thunderbolts. Another popular member is Baron Zemo, who was played by Daniel Brühl in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier last year. Another Thunderbolts character that the MCU has access to for the film is Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who is the MCU’s new Black Widow. Aside from them, the MCU has already added characters such as Ghost, Punisher, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage, and a new Taskmaster.

Given how many distinct Thunderbolts variants there have been in the comics, the MCU film’s cast might include a wide range of characters. Thunderbolts might be a method to bring back some of the Marvel TV characters from Netflix and ABC episodes, as the MCU films have begun to include more Marvel TV characters from Netflix and ABC shows. Thunderbolts would be a fantastic way to offer Mike Colter’s Luke Cage or Jon Bernthal’s Punisher new responsibilities within the MCU again. It’s also worth mentioning that, because Deadpool 3 will be part of the MCU, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, who was also a member of the squad in the comics, could easily join the team. Thunderbolts’ final destination will be determined by time.
