Singer Kylie Minogue has given her thoughts on the trademark struggle with reality TV star Kylie Jenner, years after engaging into – and winning – a legal battle with her. Ms Minogue successfully fought Ms Jenner’s attempt to copyright their common first name “Kylie” for her soon-to-be-launched beauty line in 2017.Despite the fact that the Kardashians star has made a fortune from the beauty line, their joint first name remains non-proprietary owing to Ms Minogue.

When challenged by a fan about her choice to formally prohibit Kylie Jenner from trademarking the name, the pop artist responded on Tuesday during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.“It was just business, obviously.”the 54-year-old said with a giggle. “Look, when I was named Kylie, I think I met one person older than me called Kylie. So it’s kind of unusual” Ms Minogue told host Andy Cohen. As a result, it’s a little odd.” She went on to say that she has dedicated her entire life to safeguarding and growing her business, of which her name is an integral component. “It was just something that needed to be done,” she continued, high-fiving Mr Cohen.

Ms Minogue went on to say that the two parties had “came to an understanding.“Did you have to call Kris Jenner and be like ‘Let me tell you something?”Mr Cohen continued.“No, but I’d love to meet them.”Ms Minogue answered, smiling.Kylie Jenner applied to trademark her name for “promotion” and “endorsement services” in 2014, according to a People story, before of the launch of Kylie Cosmetics.

Within a few months, Ms Minogue launched a complaint, claiming that because they share the same first name, such a trademark might potentially impair the pop singer’s business. Since August 1996, the singer-songwriter has been selling garments, perfumes, and other things under her first name on the website “Kylie.com,” according to her lawsuit. Ms Jenner was born in 1997, therefore the singer’s website was one year older than her.Ms Jenner’s trademark application was rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2017.Kylie Jenner now has her own successful beauty line, Kylie Cosmetics, while Kylie Minogue debuted her own makeup line, Kylie, in 2019.
