By January 2018, Hemsworth and Waititi have explored prospects for a Ragnarok sequel. In July 2019, Hemsworth, Waititi, and Thompson, as well as Portman, who did not appear in Ragnarok, were confirmed to return for Love and Thunder. Waititi intended to set Love and Thunder apart from Ragnarok by making a romantic comedy and an action picture set in the 1980s. He drew inspiration from Jason Aaron’s run on the Mighty Thor comic book, in which Foster takes up Thor’s mantle and powers while battling cancer. In February 2020, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson joined to contribute to the writing, and later that year, more casting was confirmed, including the presence of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Production was supposed to start in late 2020, but that didn’t happen.
