According to the show’s creator, The Midnight Gospel will not be renewed for a second season on Netflix, and will be one of the many cancellations in 2022.
The Midnight Gospel was ordered by Netflix in December 2019 and will be released in April 2020. Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time, and comedian Duncan Trussell collaborated on the show.
While garnering great reviews from reviewers and audiences alike (it has an IMDb rating of 8.2), with some reviews describing the show as “Creative, spectacular, thought-provoking, humorous, gorgeous, magnificent,” and others describing it as “Funny, witty, and surprisingly deep.”

While the show was well-liked by its fans, it didn’t make the Netflix top ten when it first aired. According to FlixPatrol, the show only made the top ten TV shows in about nine countries, with Russia, Ukraine, and Bulgaria performing best. In the United States, it did not make the top ten.

Duncan Trussell confirmed the cancellation in a response to a fan, saying, “The Midnight Gospel was cancelled by Netflix.”
“In my imagination, there’s one more season,” he said, “but the sentient glass “deciding” cube they store in their vaults vibrated “No more.” It’s also difficult to argue with a cube.”

The show has a lot of similarities to Tuca & Bertie, which was likewise out of left field in terms of wackiness, as we hope is fair to say. The show was resurrected by HBO Max, with a second season set to premiere in June 2022.
The cancellation comes at a time when Netflix’s internal animation teams are facing early development cancellations and there is a general sense that the golden age of Netflix animation has passed.
Big Mouth, which has been extended for a seventh season, Chicago Party Aunt, Inside Job, and Human Resources are among Netflix’s current animated comedies for adults. Agent King, Entergalactic, Farzar, and Mulligan are among the upcoming projects.
