The Tom Cruise-led sequel, which returns to theatres after nearly four decades, is already a blockbuster after only one day of release. Top Gun: Maverick, which debuted in theatres on May 27, is a sequel to the original Top Gun, which debuted in 1986. Fans have been anticipating the film for two years, but the premiere date was pushed back due to the pandemic, and according to the Twitter fam, it’s “absolutely worth the wait.” Tom became a celebrity after appearing in the 1986 film Top Gun. It depicted his character Maverick enrolling in Top Gun, an elite training school for US Naval aviators, and learning to trust his instincts and work as part of a team. It introduced us to his pal Goose and his adversary-turned-friend Iceman.

The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, recasts and adds a slew of highly acclaimed actors to the mix, including Val Kilmer, who reprises his role as the previous “Iceman” in the sequel, as well as Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly, who play significant characters in the film. Aside from these A-listers, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Charles Parnell, Monica Barbaro, and Danny Ramirez are also set to be a part of the global phenomenon.
