The National Health Commission reported on Monday that the Chinese mainland had added 1,366 new domestically transmitted Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours (April 4, 2022). There were 425 locally confirmed cases in Shanghai, where the military and thousands of healthcare staff were dispatched to assist with coronavirus testing for the city’s 26 million citizens.

Shanghai has recorded 8,581 new asymptomatic Covid-19 cases since it initiated a two-stage lockdown on Monday that has been expanded to confine almost all citizens to their homes. Residents in China’s financial capital have been asked to self-test for Covid-19 using antigen testing.

The latest cases were discovered as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) sent over 2,000 medical personnel to Shanghai from the army, navy, and joint logistical support forces.

According to media sources, healthcare workers from several provinces, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Beijing, have been dispatched to Shanghai, with some estimates placing the total number at over 10,000.

It’s China’s biggest public health response since the Covid-19 epidemic in Wuhan in early 2020 when the new coronavirus was initially found. Back then, the PLA was said to have dispatched about 4,000 medical personnel to Hubei Province, which includes Wuhan.

Last month, China saw its greatest outbreak since the pandemic began, with almost 56,000 illnesses recorded, much exceeding the total cases in Wuhan two years earlier.

Meanwhile, the country’s Covid-19 mortality toll remained at 4,638 people, with 1,848 patients recovering, bringing the total number of patients undergoing treatment to 25,724, with 54 in serious condition.
