A former employee of Australia’s embassy in Bangkok has been prosecuted after many spy cameras were discovered in the mission’s women’s restrooms, according to a Canberra official on Saturday.

Spy cameras were discovered in the women’s restroom at the Australian Embassy in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. They were allegedly imposed by a former local employee who worked there. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated that a former member of the embassy’s local staff was detained in connection with the matter by the Royal Thai Police last month.

An official in Canberra said on Saturday that a former employee has been accused of concealing them after several spy cameras were discovered in the bathrooms of women at the mission, while Australia’s Foreign Affairs and The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that the Royal Thai Police arrested a former member of the local staff in this case last month. According to a representative for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the interests and privacy of all embassy personnel are of the utmost importance to the department, and we will continue to give all required support. However, the representative declined to comment further on the pending legal situation.

Khemmarin Hassiri, Commander of the Royal Thai Police’s Foreign Affairs Department, stated that the Australian Embassy lodged a complaint against a man on January 6. Thai police stated the investigation is ongoing, although it is unclear how long the cameras were positioned in the restroom, according to a media report. This issue finally came to light when the camera’s SD card was discovered on the lavatory floor some time ago. According to an Australian defense and foreign policy specialist, the occurrence is a significant example of a security breach.

If the embassy’s security was loose enough to enable equipment like cameras to be installed anywhere in such a protected area, it is apparent that not enough precautions were taken to keep the embassy safe.
