A South Korean TV show has received nominations in top categories for the first time in Golden Globes history.

Late last night, it was reported that the global smash-hit series ‘Squid Game’ has received three nominations for the upcoming awards event. The survival drama will compete for Best Drama Series against ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘Pose,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘Lupin.’

Lee Jung-jae of ‘Succession,’ Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong of ‘Pose,’ Billy Porter of ‘Pose,’ and Omar Sy of ‘Lupin’ are all vying for Best TV Actor in a Drama Series.

O Yeong-su, along with Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of ‘The Morning Show,’ Kieran Culkin of ‘Succession,’ and Brett Goldstein of ‘Ted Lasso,’ was nominated for best supporting actor in television.

The statement was made almost in the midst of the controversy that has kept the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on its toes since it came under fire for its racially homogeneous makeup and alleged corruption in a bombshell Los Angeles Times investigation earlier this year.

Through nods to women and people of color in the directing and acting categories, the HFPA attempted to be more inclusive. Although non-English international TV series such as ‘Squid Game’ (South Korean) and ‘Lupin’ (French) have received the most attention for their nominations, satirical black comedy ‘Succession’ reigned supreme with five nominations.

The nominations, on the other hand, are not unexpected. According to reports, ‘Squid Game’ has emerged as a strong contender in the US year-end awards season, with the possibility of becoming the first Korean-made TV series to win a coveted prize.

. The Korean program, which was well-received in the United States, could be in line for an Emmy nomination.

After Bong Joon-‘Parasite’ ho’s swept the awards-positioning autumn film festivals and the ultimate Academy Awards, and Youn Yuh-jung of ‘Minari’ took home the first acting Oscar, the American awards season has captivated Korean audiences like never before.

The nine-part series about contestants competing in deadly Korean children’s playground games for the equivalent of $38.5 million in prize money, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, has become a global phenomenon, with 142 million households watching it in the first four weeks of its release on September 17.

The 2021 Gotham Awards nominated ‘Squid Game’ for two categories: Breakthrough Series: Long Format (above 40 minutes) and Outstanding Performance in a New Series for its lead actor, Lee Jung-jae, earlier this year.

Since the Gotham Awards nominations, American media outlets have upped the chances of ‘Squid Game’ winning a slew of major awards, including the Critics Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
