Only three actors have played Spider-Man on the big screen, according to actor Tom Holland, so it might be an alienating experience. As a result, he leaned on his connection with actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, both of whom had already portrayed the Marvel character. They even have their own WhatsApp group.
Holland was given a picture of him and Garfield hugging each other and asked about it in an interview with BBC Radio 1 ahead of the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Tom Holland says that he and fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are in a WhatsApp group.
“It’s an interesting thing,” he added, “because there are only three people who have played Spider-Man on the big screen.” And it’s a very strange experience. I have friendships and ties with people with whom I can express my concerns, discuss my problems, and so on. But nothing beats doing it with someone who has actually worn the suit. And as for me, I don’t know Andrew all that well, but I spotted him at this party and felt compelled to say hello. We’ve shared something that just a few others have done. And, interestingly enough, we went to another party after that, and barely 20 minutes later, I ran into Tobey. We’ve been becoming closer over the last few years because we’ve realized that we have something that just the three of us have.”
Holland reiterated that the two actors will not appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as has long been speculated, but expressed his desire to work with them in the future. He then stated that they’re both in the same WhatsApp group.
“I don’t know how it got set up, but we ran into Tobey at a Japanese restaurant a while ago, and I took his number,” he said. “I believe I was the one who set it up.” He joked that no one on the group has responded to his messages yet. He smiled, “I think I’m the only one who’s ever spoken in it.”
The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are the two films in which Garfield has played the character. Tobey Maguire was the first actor to portray Spider-Man on the big screen, in a trilogy of films directed by Sam Raimi. Holland first appeared as the character in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Since then, he’s played Spider-Man in two Avengers films and two solo flicks. The third instalment, No Way Home, will be released on December 16th.
