During the 1970s Chipko Movement, British actor Emma Watson praised Indian rural women for conserving trees and forests. Emma shared a photo from an environmental conservation initiative spearheaded by Indian villagers on her Instagram account.

Emma commented, “Giving a shout-out to the women who protect trees and forests,” “Thank you for your dedication to preserving our forests and trees! The women seen here were part of the Chipko movement in India during the 1970s, which was a nonviolent social and environmental movement led by rural peasants, notably women. They’re defending a tree from logging by the government. The demonstrator’s principal method of embracing trees to protect them from loggers is reflected in the Hindi name Chipko, which means “to hug” or “to cling to.””

Instagram users reacted positively to Emma’s photo, thanking her for recognizing the women’s struggle. “Thank you for representing India in a good way and positively.” one individual stated. “Thank you Emma for posting about the Chipko Movement on behalf of Indians,” another said. “We are smitten with you.”

“Alas the man who led the Chipko movement and gave it direction – Sunderlal Bahuguna – passed away from Covid related complications in May of this year,” one person remarked in response to Sunderlal Bahuguna’s death. The Chipko Movement began in April 1973. The first protest took place in Mandal, a village in the upper Alaknanda valley.
