Call of Duty has been Activision Blizzard’s greatest gift to all the gamers. Its most recent installment to the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, has shattered many sales records. There’s no stopping to it yet. Activision Blizzard has proudly revealed the new game has been sold for a record number of times in all of Call of Duty’s history. But, the company hesitated from pin pointing to an exact number of sales.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Has Benefited Activision Blizzard Greatly

The sales record is truly an achievement for the gaming giant as the numbers spanned only till September 30. It means that the game was selling like cupcakes. It didn’t even require a year to break past sales records from its release in October. What’s unclear is which game in the Call of Duty franchise previously held the record. Activision also stated that two-thirds of the game sales were digital. That’s highly rewarding for Activision, as the company generates more revenue from digital game sales than boxed copies.

The BR game Warzone further assisted to push the sales of Modern Warfare, Activision said in its statement. The company recorded “substantial growth” in selling copies of Modern Warfare when people upgraded from Warzone, which is free to play, to the paid version.Additionally, Activision also said that the total number of hours invested in playing the “Modern Warfare universe,” which includes both Modern Warfare and Warzone, were about seven times more than those of Black Ops 4.

All in all, Modern Warfare and Warzone had thrice as many monthly active users than Black Ops 4 did during the same span of time. Active console users “grew strongly” month by month, Activision said, while the number of active PC players exploded “over ten-fold” compared to last year. Besides playing more Call of Duty, people are spending more money in it too. Activision’s microtransaction sales for the two COD games increased by four folds compared to the year before. The next installment in the Call of Duty franchise is the Black Ops Cold War. It will be released later this month for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X.
