The Weeknd, a Canadian singer, was taken aback when his song "Blinding Lights," which he released in 2019, surpassed all previous records for Spotify streaming.

The 32-year-old singer,  announced the news on New Year's Eve through Twitter, according to

When he learned that his song had successfully overtaken Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," he replied, "FOR NEW YEARS???." adding three faces, a party hat, and a party horn emoji.

Later, The Weeknd took to Instagram to share images from the "Blinding Lights" music video, featuring footage of him laughing while his mouth was covered in blood while wearing a blood-red outfit. 

He wished the lights in the caption "Happy New Year. The song with the highest streaming volume tonight.

On November 29, 2019, The Weeknd released "Blinding Lights" for the first time as the second single from his fourth studio album, "After Hours."

The song spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 after making its debut at number 11. 

It finally turned out to be the first song to remain in the top 10 for a complete year.

The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" defeated Ed's "Shape of You" by 918,000 filtered streams, according to Spotify's Daily Global ranking. 

 On The Breakfast Club in October, Ed talked about the potential for "Blinding Lights" to cover his song.
