Next Goal Wins, the next film from acclaimed director Taika Waititi, has just received an official release date from Searchlight.
In the spring of 2023, a theatrical release of the touching sports comedy is planned.
The true story of unconventional coach Thomas Rongen, who was chosen to try and turn average soccer players from the American Samoa national team into stars, is told in the movie Next Goal Wins.
Next Goal Wins is directed by Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Iain Morris.
Along with Garrett Basch and Jonathan Cavendish, Waititi is the movie’s producer.
The movie is based on the documentary of the same name from 2014, which was directed by Mike Brett and produced by Steve Jamison as well.
Honolulu’s production got under way back in November 2019 and was finished in January 2020.
Waititi’s successful career began with the oddball independent comedies Eagle vs. Shark and Boy.
Waititi quickly became well-known after directing the unexpectedly successful mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, which gave rise to a successful TV spin-off with the same name that is presently airing on FX.
