Idris Elba is well-known in Hollywood these days for his powerful performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor is also known for his scene-stealing performance as the laconic Captain Janek in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (2012); wrapped in prosthetics as Krall opposite Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk in Star Trek: Beyond (2016)
Elba’s big break came in British primetime television, where he played DCI John Luther in the long-running international hit crime series Luther.
An upcoming Netflix Original film co-produced with BBC Films is titled Luther. Neil Cross wrote the screenplay, and Jamie Payne directed it.
Since the first scripts for a Luther movie were written in 2013, preparations have been ongoing. But because the series won’t end until 2019, plans for the movie were put on hold until 2020, when they were finally revealed.
In July 2021, we published our initial report on the proposed Netflix release of Luther.
Cynthia Erivo, best known for her roles in Bad Times at the El Royale and Harriet, has been cast in an unspecified role. However, it has been reported that Erivo will play Luther’s antagonist.
Andy Serkis, who played the villain in The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes, has also been confirmed. Dermot Crowley also reprises his role as Schenk. We still don’t know who the remaining cast members are.
Luther was being filmed on set, Idris Elba confirmed in November 2021 via a behind-the-scenes photo. Several months of filming were completed by the middle of February 2022.
