The fourth and fifth Avatar sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, may not be directed by James Cameron, who may hand the reins over to someone else.

Because of Avatar's phenomenal popularity, 20th Century Fox approved plans for him to create four sequels.

Because of Avatar's phenomenal popularity, 20th Century Fox approved plans for him to create four sequels.

Disney and 20th Century have continued with Cameron's concept in spite of these worries. To make the most of the young actors playing important roles, the filmmaker simultaneously shot Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar 3.

In December 2024, the third instalment in the Avatar series is expected to hit theatres. Previous rumours suggested that Disney and 20th Century Fox might hold off on allowing Cameron to start shooting Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 until they had seen some of the box office results from the first sequel he will be directing.

All four of the Avatar sequels are supposed to be directed by James Cameron, but the celebrated filmmaker now says that may not be the case.

He recently discussed the future of the franchise during an interview with Empire for the digital magazine's large spread on Avatar: The Way of Water.

In this interview, Cameron revealed that he might not helm every Avatar sequel. The Avatar franchise creator is open to other directors taking over, but nothing has been finalised as of yet due to the commitment to completing these movies and interest in other projects.

The likelihood that Cameron won't be directing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 could be important.

The director may simply be getting fatigued after working on Avatar: The Way of Water for so long, but he could also be considering what this commitment actually entails.
