East Coast Braces for Record Heat Wave: Duration and Impact

The East Coast is facing a severe heat wave, with record temperatures and high heat indices stretching across the region. The heat wave, which follows extreme temperatures on the West Coast, is expected to affect over 100 million people in 33 states.

As of Monday, major cities like Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are under excessive heat warnings. In Philadelphia, the heat index is forecast to soar to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting the city health department to issue a heat health emergency.

To combat the extreme temperatures, Philadelphia has set up over 150 cooling centers. Mayor Cherelle Parker has urged residents to check on older neighbors and use the cooling centers to stay safe.

New York City and Boston are also under heat advisories through Tuesday. These advisories are issued when the heat index is forecasted to be dangerously high, posing risks to public health.

Record daily highs are anticipated in several cities on Monday. Raleigh, North Carolina, could hit 101 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 99 degrees. Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and other cities are also expected to set new temperature records.

The intense heat is forecasted to persist into Tuesday and could extend into Wednesday before a cold front arrives. This cold front is expected to bring relief, ending the heat wave by Wednesday night or Thursday.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities, and seek air-conditioned spaces to minimize heat-related illnesses. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential heat-related emergencies.
