Causeway, a new drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Brian Tyree Henry that released its first trailer on Thursday, is Apple TV+’s entry into the Oscar race.

Lawrence, who made her name in the 2010 film Winter’s Bone, directed by Debra Granik, and received an Oscar nomination for her leading role, returns to her origins with Causeway.

She has since gone on to star in important films directed by some of the most well-known directors working today, including the popular Hunger Games series.

Lawrence plays Lynsey in the film Causeway, an Afghan War veteran who suffers a crippling brain injury after an IED explosion and returns to the United States.

The emotional centre of the movie, which has been called a quiet but tragic, and eventually inspiring, drama about coming to grips and going forward, is formed by Lynsey’s developing friendship with James.

The trailer clearly presents a gloomy image of Lynsey’s struggles to actually get back on her feet.

We also get a quick glimpse of James’ potential problems and a few heartfelt glimmers of their developing relationship.

Lawrence last appeared in the Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, directed by Adam McKay, where she co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and numerous other A-list actors.

Causeway had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was well-received and the leading performances were praised.
