In Olivia Hetreed’s new drama series Song of the Sun God, Bridgerton actress Charithra Chandran has been cast as the series’ protagonist.

On the six-part television series based on Shankari Chandran’s book, the actress will also serve as an associate producer.

Chandran will star in and produce the new drama series based on the 2017 book, according to a recent Deadline story.

Chandran will portray the title character Leela in the upcoming series.

Chandran is best known for her breakthrough performance as Edwina Sharma in the second season of Netflix’s popular period drama Bridgerton.

Leela is a young Australian woman who has moved to London and is estranged from her own culture and unaware of her family’s long-kept secrets.

Chandran, who is represented by Jonathan Arun Group in the UK and Gersh in the US, also plays Sabina Pleasance in Alex Rider on Prime Video and the September-released rom-com podcast A Mid-Semester Night’s Dream.

Song of the Sun God will be co-produced by Australian company Photoplay Films and independent Synchronicity Films, with author Chandran serving as a creative adviser.

On the series, Mundell (Synchronicity Films) and Karen Radzyner (Photoplay Films) will collaborate.

According to Mundel, Synchronicity chose to take on the project as part of its drive and enthusiasm for adapting powerful and significant literature for the screen.
