The comic series, titled Avatar: The High Ground, will debut in October later this year by Dark Horse Comics.

Sherri L. Smith (The Toymaker's Apprentice) wrote the series, and Guilherme Balbi illustrated it.

The series will be based on a story idea that Cameron scrapped while working on the Avatar sequels.

Volume 1 of the series, which features Jake and Neytiri ready for battle with their own weapons, is now available for pre-order and will be released on October 25.

While waiting for the comic, fans can check out DK's The World of Avatar: A Visual Exploration, which features the flora and fauna of Pandora as well as some of the marine creatures that will appear in the sequel.

Fans of Avatar may rest easy knowing that the franchise is finally regaining momentum in popular culture with a new comic book series on the horizon and growing excitement for the impending sequel.

The first volume of Avatar: The High Ground will be released on October 25, and can be pre-ordered now.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released exclusively in theaters on December 16.
