In a short time in theatres, Avatar: The Way of Water has already made more than $500 million.
The movie is the long-awaited follow-up to 2009's Avatar, which continues to rank among the most financially successful movies of all time.
As humanity returns to the moon Pandora, it reunites original actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaa to guide a brand-new adventure alongside many familiar faces and new allies and foes.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that after the movie's December 16 release, Avatar: The Way of Water's box office has already achieved another victory by earning the second-highest single-day Wednesday gross of the whole year.
Its combined worldwide gross of $609.7 million in just seven days is the result of its domestic gross of $182.9 million and its foreign gross of $426.8 million.
This is still much ahead of where the original movie was at this point in its run, even if it still has a long way to go to catch Avatar's total run.
The movie Avatar: The Way of Water is currently on pace to earn the most money overseas.
This is due to the James Cameron sequel receiving a highly sought-after Chinese release, making it one of the very few American films to have been broadcast there since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This does not, however, guarantee that it will be at the top of the global charts at the end of 2022.
This is mainly due to the movie's late release date, which gave it just 15 days to reach the top of the charts before the new year.
