The DC Universe has officially found its Perry White as DC Studios casts the iconic Daily Planet editor-in-chief for James Gunn’s Superman movie. David Corenswet’s Superman film is on its way, as Gunn and the cast began principal photography in Atlanta, Georgia, this week. Previously titled Superman: Legacy, Gunn revealed that the movie will simply be called Superman, and is still being on track for its July 2025 release date.
While the Superman movie cast was believed to have been completed prior to the start of filming, it appears they were not entirely done yet. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Wendell Pierce (Jack Ryan, Suits) has been cast as Perry White in Superman. As of publication, neither Gunn nor DC Studios has confirmed the casting.
Created for The Adventures with Superman radio serial in 1940, Perry White has been one of the biggest recurring characters in Superman’s DC lore for decades. Traditionally, Perry is the editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet and the direct boss of Clark, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen. Pierce marks the fifth actor to play Perry White in a Superman movie, joining Pierre Watkin, Jackie Cooper, Frank Langella, and more recently, Laurence Fishburne in the DCEU movie timeline
While Superman won’t be an origin story for Clark, it will still establish the Man of Steel in his early days as a superhero, as well as a reporter. Perry will obviously serve as one of the authority figures in Clark’s daily life, as well as other Daily Planet staff members who have been cast. Outside his role as a supporting player, it remains to be seen what Perry’s story will look like in Gunn’s Superman movie.
It will be interesting to see if other Daily Planet employees will be cast for Superman too, including Cat Grant and Steve Lombard. With someone of Pierce’s caliber, the DC Universe has landed itself an incredible actor for the next cinematic version of Perry White.
