Following the cancellation of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 3 movie, the co-CEOs of the DC universe have now announced a new Superman movie in which Henry Cavill will not reprise his role as the superhero. The fandom’s inability to accept the radical alterations introduced by James Gunn and Peter Safran suggests that the DC universe’s “dooms day” is getting closer than it should be.

There was a lot of anticipation and talk about Henry’s Superman comeback. Even a few months prior, he had announced the news. The fans were hoping to see their favourite actor don the cape once more, but it appears the co-CEOs are against it. James Gunn, the film’s director and co-CEO, announced on Twitter that they are writing a new Superman movie that will centre on his early years and that Henry Cavill will not reprise his role as the superhero.

The tweet reads, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.” The tweet further read, “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Variety was told by a source close to the DC universe that James Gunn and Peter Safran met with Henry Cavill and came up with a another role for the Witcher actor to play. Henry already announced on his Instagram page that he would not be returning as Superman wearing the cape a few hours prior. His letter to his supporters is as follows, “It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
