WBD Settles NBA Broadcast Rights Lawsuit, Moves 'Inside the NBA' to ESPN and ABC

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is set to settle its lawsuit against the NBA and announce a deal with Disney to exclusively license the popular show "Inside the NBA" starting next season. This deal comes after WBD sued the NBA in July, alleging that its contractual rights to match offers were overlooked when the league signed new broadcasting rights deals with Disney, Amazon, and NBC totaling $76 billion.

Under the settlement, the 2024-25 NBA season will be the last for TNT as the broadcaster for the NBA. However, WBD will retain significant rights, including creating content from NBA footage for a variety of programs over the next decade. This includes creating talk shows, variety shows, and docuseries, along with securing rights to broadcast live NBA games in northern Europe and Latin America for the next 11 years. WBD’s digital platforms, Bleacher Report and House of Highlights, will also have global rights to NBA content.

In addition to this, WBD will sign a multi-year licensing deal with Disney, making ESPN and ABC the exclusive broadcasters of "Inside the NBA" starting next season. Despite the shift to Disney, the show will still be produced by TNT Sports, and the current hosts — Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal — will remain in their roles. WBD is also planning a sports spin-off of the program.

The agreement also includes sports content rights for college football and men’s basketball. WBD will air Big 12 conference games on TNT and its Max streaming service, as well as College Football Playoff games starting this year through a separate deal with ESPN. This positions WBD to expand its live sports offerings amid growing demand for sports broadcasting across traditional and streaming platforms.
