BYU wide receiver Parker Kingston turned a near disaster into one of the most electrifying plays of the 2024 college football season with an incredible 90-yard punt return touchdown in the Cougars’ stunning 38-9 upset victory over No. 13 Kansas State on Saturday night.

The return itself was nothing short of a highlight-reel moment. Kingston initially muffed the punt while on the run, bobbling the ball near his own 22-yard line. The mishap forced him to backtrack, eventually retrieving the ball near the 10-yard line, putting him in a precarious position deep in BYU territory. What followed was a jaw-dropping display of athleticism and improvisation as Kingston evaded Kansas State’s coverage team by darting across the entire width of the field. The football field is just over 53 yards wide, and by cutting from the near sideline to the far sideline, Kingston added an estimated 48 yards of lateral running to his official 90-yard return.

In total, the return likely covered close to 150 yards of running from the moment Kingston first touched the ball to his dramatic dash into the end zone. As if the return wasn’t already wild enough, Kingston nearly committed a second major mistake—he dropped the ball immediately after crossing the goal line in celebration. Luckily, a heads-up BYU teammate recovered it in the end zone, ensuring the touchdown would stand.

Kingston’s electrifying return extended BYU’s lead to 31-6, effectively sealing the game for the Cougars. The punt return capped off a dominant stretch where BYU capitalized on three Kansas State turnovers, turning them into 28 unanswered points. Kansas State had taken an early 6-3 lead, but their first turnover triggered a momentum shift that BYU fully exploited, including Kingston’s game-breaking punt return.

Kingston’s heroics not only underscored BYU’s surprising dominance but also secured one of the most memorable moments in their upset win, a victory that will resonate throughout the 2024 season.
