Award-Winning Director Hamdan Ballal Assaulted and Detained

Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, has gone missing after reportedly being attacked by a group of settlers in his home village of Susya. His fellow director, Yuval Abraham, revealed the disturbing incident on social media, stating that Ballal suffered severe injuries before being taken away by soldiers. Since then, there has been no word on his condition or location.

Eyewitnesses Report Brutal Assault

According to reports from The Associated Press and the Center for Jewish Non-Violence, Ballal was assaulted by masked settlers who pelted stones at his car, slashed his tires, and then physically attacked him with knives and sticks. Witnesses stated that he was bleeding from head and stomach injuries when he called for medical assistance. However, soldiers reportedly intercepted the ambulance and took him away, leaving his family and colleagues without any information on his whereabouts.

Yuval Abraham Raises Alarm on Social Media

Ballal’s co-director, Yuval Abraham, took to X (formerly Twitter) to shed light on the situation. “A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal, co-director of our film No Other Land,” he wrote. “They beat him, and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called and took him. No sign of him since.”

Leah Zemel, a lawyer handling the case, confirmed that three Palestinians have been arrested in connection with the violence. Meanwhile, the International Documentary Association (IDA) has issued a statement demanding Ballal’s immediate release. “We demand Ballal’s immediate release and that his family and community be informed about his condition, location, and the justification for his detention,” the statement read.
