Story

“The Penguin Lessons” centers on English teacher Tom Michel (Steve Coogan), who works in Buenos Aires during a turbulent time in Argentine history. Tom finds a penguin struggling to survive, covered in oil, while on a weekend trip to the coast. In defiance of all odds, he saves the penguin and gives him the name Juanito. As Argentina experiences profound social upheaval, Tom embarks on a journey of political and personal awakening with the help of this unlikely companionship.

Plot Summary

Amidst political turmoil and the emergence of a military dictatorship in Argentina during the turbulent 1970s, The Penguin Lessons is a moving dramedy. The movie centers on Englishman Tom Michell (Steve Coogan), who relocates to Argentina in search of adventure and a new beginning. When he finds an oil-covered penguin off the coast of Uruguay and names it Juan Salvador, his journey takes an unexpected turn.

A strange bond develops between the two as Tom heals the penguin. Juan Salvador transcends his role as a pet to become a symbol of resiliency and hope in a nation where fear and oppression are commonplace. Tom is also forced to face his own indifference to the political unrest going on around him by the penguin’s presence.
