Plot Summary
Formerly a well-known actress, Sue Templeton (Margaret Qualley) is currently battling the harsh realities of a waning career in the glitzy yet competitive world of entertainment. Sue is finding it difficult to stay relevant in a field that feeds off of youth and beauty now that the fame that seemed to last forever is a faint memory.
Sue, in a desperate attempt to regain her former fame, discovers a murky underground network that sells “The Substance,” a drug on the black market. This illegal formula for making new cells promises to make her temporarily into a younger, more energetic version of herself. Sue chooses to go ahead despite cautions and moral dilemmas because her desire for renewal is so great that it surpasses her hesitations.
The change is astonishing. Sue’s career soars once more as she transforms into a more seductive and self-assured version of herself. Nevertheless, there is a price for this recent success. There is a dark side to the drug: Sue loses herself more and more the longer she takes it. As the distinction between her real identity and the manufactured one blurs, her relationships become strained and her perception of reality distorts, causing her to unravel.
Sue meets Harvey (Dennis Quaid), a reclusive scientist who once assisted in the drug’s development but now regrets his involvement, as her dependence on “The Substance” grows. Harvey tries to warn Sue about the potentially harmful side effects of the medication, but Sue’s obsession with perfection consumes him and his warnings are ignored.
Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a former rival who is now a mentor, admits that she used drugs as a young person and that the experience was terrible, which furthers her downward spiral. Sue is thrust deeper into a terrifying reality where she must face the truth about herself and the price of her vanity as a result of Elisabeth’s attempt to assist her.
Sue fights to reclaim her identity and her life in the midst of chaos, and she has to find her way through a perilous path of horror, deceit, and manipulation. She sets out on a perilous mission to escape the substance’s hold before it totally consumes her with Harvey’s assistance.
