The UNICEF has released a very disturbing report indicating that over 370 million girls around the world have been subjected to sexual violence. The shocking statistics, by a comprehensive analysis of studies and surveys, reflect widespread incidence of this worldwide problem.

The report underlines the devastating impact sexual violence has on a girl's health and well-being, education, and economic future. Such disasters have been seen to leave the survivors of sexual violence feeling traumatized for long periods and may lead to depression and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, among others. Even worse still, it may result in unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, among other dreadful consequences.

Evidence covered by UNICEF exposes the underlying factors that bring about high sexual violence cases against girls. Some of the said factors include gender inequality, poverty, conflict, and lack of access to education and health care. As such, this report calls for immediate action in order to address the root cause issues and safe space for girls to stay.

It should strengthen legal frameworks, promote access to care and psychosocial services, and meaningfully promote education and awareness about sexual violence. The organization calls on governments and communities to take specific actions to prevent sexual violence against girls, including the implementation of comprehensive sex education programs and promotion of gender equality.

All these stories make one wonder whether ever again will the heinous sexual violence befall these defenseless girls. The report, therefore, projects the urgent need to protect girls from sexual violence. Through awareness and advocating for change, UNICEF is working towards a world where every girl lives free from fear and violence.
