UCLA Dominates Iowa with Stout Defense and Explosive Run Game to Extend Win Streak

UCLA's path to bowl eligibility became clearer as the Bruins pulled off a gritty 20-17 win over Iowa at the Rose Bowl. This victory marked their fourth of the season and extended their win streak to three games against Big Ten opponents.

The game was a test of resilience for UCLA (4-5, 3-4 Big Ten), which had to overcome penalties, turnovers, and a tough Iowa defense. With under five minutes left, kicker Mateen Bhaghani’s 27-yard field goal gave UCLA a lead they held onto, while the defense sealed the victory with a key stop on third down. The Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3) were unable to capitalize on their final possession, and UCLA ran out the clock after picking up two crucial first downs.

The Bruins' running game was a key factor, with running back T.J. Harden leading the charge with 125 yards on 20 carries. Harden, along with Jalen Berger and Keegan Jones, out-rushed Iowa’s top-ranked ground game, which included Kaleb Johnson, the nation’s second-leading rusher. UCLA finished with 211 rushing yards, while limiting Johnson to just 49 yards on 18 attempts—well below his season average.

"Our run game has been getting better every week," said head coach DeShaun Foster, celebrating his first Rose Bowl win. "We took pride in wanting to out-rush them, and we did that."

UCLA's defense, ranked No. 11 in the nation, was also crucial. Linebacker Carson Schwesinger grabbed two interceptions—his first career picks—and Kain Medrano forced another turnover. Despite several mistakes, including three turnovers and numerous penalties, UCLA's defense kept pressure on Iowa and stifled their offense when it mattered most.

Offensively, quarterback Ethan Garbers bounced back from early struggles, throwing for 204 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. His 29-yard touchdown pass to Logan Loya in the second quarter gave UCLA a lead they would not relinquish.

The win puts UCLA one step closer to bowl eligibility, with a chance to finish strong in the remainder of their season. "It’s great, especially with the fact that we know what it takes to win," said Harden. "We’ve got to put it together every week, but we’re heading in the right direction."
