Jamie Bernstein, the accomplished author, filmmaker, and daughter of the iconic conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein, was a guest on Kenneth Womack’s “Everything Fab Four” podcast, sharing intimate memories of her Beatlemania experiences and her father’s admiration for the Fab Four. The podcast, drafted by Womack—a renowned music scholar and columnist for Salon—and co-produced with me, is released through Salon.
With a “larger than life” father like Leonard, Jamie’s upbringing was far from dull. She recounts her fascination with the Beatles beginning at age 11, a passion she found her father shared. “The Beatles were already on my radar, so by February 1964 [the Beatles’ appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show”] I was an utter Beatlemaniac, dreaming about them and perfectly aged to savor their successive albums as they were released,” she recalled.
Leonard Bernstein, conducting his “Young People’s Concerts” at the time, understood the importance of connecting with younger audiences and often incorporated popular music into his performances. Jamie recalled, “My dad would use ‘And I Love Her’ to demonstrate song form and the response from the kids was tremendous. He esteemed the Beatles as much as the great American songwriters and Schubert for their creative and melodic prowess. Sharing Beatles music with my dad taught me so much.”
As the Beatles progressed through the 1960s, they attracted Leonard’s interest too, especially after “Sgt. Pepper.” Jamie and her father delved into the album’s complexity together, and Leonard even led album listening sessions with dinner guests. The connection with the Beatles persisted, with Leonard considering setting John Lennon’s “In His Own Write” poems to music and eventually choosing the Dakota building—where Lennon resided with Yoko Ono—as his own home, a place marked by tragedy in December 1980 when Lennon was assassinated. Jamie reminisces on that horrific day, “My dad and I mourned together that night, but there were also joyous memories, such as casual encounters with Lennon at the Dakota.”
