Los Angeles: The demise of Andre Braugher from lung cancer was confirmed by his representative.
The Emmy-winning actor, known for his roles in the series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street”, passed away on Monday at the age of 61. Initially, his representatives had only mentioned a brief illness, but his publicist Jennifer Allen revealed the cause on Thursday.
Braugher rarely disclosed details about his personal life, and his co-stars were taken by surprise at his demise. In 2014, he shared with the New York Times that he had quit smoking and drinking many years ago.
A native of Chicago, Braugher made a significant mark in Hollywood with the 1989 film “Glory”, where he starred alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.
He gained further prominence by portraying Detective Frank Pemberton, the central character in the NBC police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street”, which he was part of for seven seasons. This role earned him the first of his two career Emmys.
Braugher received 11 Emmy nominations, with four of them attributed to his comedic portrayal of Captain Ray Holt on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, the series starring Andy Samberg, which aired for eight seasons on Fox and NBC.
