With reshoots underway for the anticipated Captain America: Brave New World, actor Tim Blake Nelson sheds light on his shadowy MCU character, Samuel Sterns/The Leader’s activities throughout the years.
While discussing the ongoing reshoots with ScreenRant, Nelson expressed his excitement. “I’m headed to Atlanta tomorrow to continue working on that,” he revealed about the additional Brave New World photography.
“The process of revisiting a character I played 16 years ago and how he’s evolved along with me has been thrilling. The creative team at Marvel has crafted an intriguing backstory to account for his 16-year absence and unveil what he’s been up to,” explained Nelson.
The last sighting of Nelson’s character in the MCU was in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, where he appeared as an enigmatic contact known as “Mr. Blue.” Sterns initially deceives Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) but in doing so, is injured by Banner’s blood, setting the stage for his transformation into The Leader.

Fans eagerly await Nelson’s return to the MCU after a 16-year hiatus, speculating whether his Leader character will sport the quintessential oversized green brain. Nelson confirmed to Michael Rosenbaum on the Inside of You podcast that the character’s brain will be realized on-screen with minimal CGI use.
“Everything possible was done to physically portray the character with minimal digital effects, a vision that Marvel fully supported, and I am particularly grateful for Kevin Feige and Nate Moore’s endorsement of this approach,” Nelson commented.
Insights on the Captain America 4 Reshoots
Initially introduced as Captain America: New World Order, the sequel featuring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson concluded principal photography in June 2023, ahead of the SAG-AFTRA industry strike. However, following lower test screening outcomes as reported by Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic, the film underwent a title change to Captain America: Brave New World and scheduled reshoots for several key sequences.
By December 2024, Matthew Orton of Moon Knight fame was recruited to script “additional scenes and material” in preparation for the reshoots. Moreover, Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad was cast in an undisclosed role.
Under the direction of Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World is slated for a February 14, 2025 theatrical release.
