Fans eager for more of The Batman universe will be delighted to hear the updated release window for the The Penguin spin-off series. The much-awaited show stars Colin Farrell reprising his role as the iconic villain.
The Penguin Premiere Date on Max Defined
HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has identified The Penguin series as “the next big tentpole series” on the horizon for Max, following the second season of House of the Dragon.
According to a recent interview with Variety, Bloys stated, “That is coming out of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and it’s fantastic. Just like Peacemaker came out of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, it’s a really good example of what you can do. That’ll be in September.”
First revealed in September 2021, The Penguin picks up a week after the events of the 2022 film The Batman, with an eight-episode narrative following Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot in his quest to rise to the pinnacle of Gotham’s underbelly.
Production of The Penguin commenced in March 2023 but saw an unexpected interruption in June due to strikes by the WGA and subsequent support by SAG. Filming resumed in November 2023 once the strikes were resolved and concluded in February 2024.
Colin Farrell is joined by a stellar cast, including Cristin Milioti portraying Sofia Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, and Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni — all of whom appeared in the series’ first teaser trailer.
The cast also boasts Michael Kelly, Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, Scott Cohen, Theo Rossi, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, David H. Holmes, and Craig Walker. Additionally, Mark Strong, known for his role as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam!, is cast in an undisclosed character.
The Batman’s world continues to expand with The Penguin laying the groundwork for The Batman Part II, where Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman. This sequel, directed by Reeves and co-written with Mattson Tomlin, was moved from its initial October 2025 release to October 2026, possibly impacted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a shortage of production stages, as reported by insider Jeff Sneider.
Expectations are high for The Penguin, which is scheduled to hit screens on Max in September 2024.
