Chad Stahelski, the directorial mastermind behind the John Wick series, expresses his views on casting Bill Skarsgård in the reboot of The Crow.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Stahelski stated, “When I heard Bill was doing it, I was like, ‘That’s a good take.’ Bill has that otherworldly quality that gives you the impression he’s from a different plane of existence or planet.”
Stahelski is no newbie to the world of The Crow, having served as the stunt double for Brandon Lee in the classic 1994 film directed by Alex Proyas. Following the tragic on-set death of Lee due to a prop gun incident, Staheli, a close friend of Lee, worked painstakingly to complete Lee’s scenes with what he described as primitive early “deep fake” techniques.
Reflecting back, Stahelski noted, “I had to sit for weeks with Alex Proyas and watch all of the footage. At that time, face replacement was in its infancy — it required meticulous matching of movements.”
Although Stahelski is hopeful for the new rendition of James O’Barr’s original graphic novel, Proyas has previously made clear his opposition, arguing that the new project does not honor Lee’s memory. His stance was articulated in a deleted Facebook post where he stated, “The Crow is not merely a film – it’s a tribute to Brandon Lee’s lost potential and the tragedy surrounding it. That is his enduring memory, and it should be left undisturbed.”
