Tyler Robinson Charged With Aggravated Murder of Charlie Kirk

On September 16, 2025, Utah prosecutors formally charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with multiple serious crimes in connection with the killing of political activist Charlie Kirk. The shooting occurred on September 10 at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was speaking at a Turning Point USA event.

The charges filed against Robinson include:

  • Aggravated murder — the top charge.
  • Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury.
  • Violent offense committed in front of a child.
  • Two counts of obstruction of justice.
  • Two counts of witness tampering.

In announcing the charges, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray also declared that the state will seek the death penalty should Robinson be convicted of aggravated murder.

What’s Known About the Allegations & Evidence

Prosecutors allege that Robinson planned the killing for more than a week and targeted Kirk because of his political expression. Surveillance footage shows someone matching Robinson’s appearance entering the UVU campus with what appears to be a concealed rifle.

Some of the other evidence includes:

  • Messages and text exchanges where Robinson purportedly confessed to the shooting.
  • A note left with his roommate under a keyboard saying, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
  • Physical evidence linking Robinson to the crime: the rifle believed to have been used was discovered, and bullet casings with etched messages were found near the scene.

Robinson is being held without bail. His first court appearance has been set, and the case is proceeding toward formal arraignment.

Why This Case Raises Broader Issues

The case is drawing national attention not only because of who Charlie Kirk was, but also for what it may say about political violence, motive, free speech, and how ideology may factor into acts of violence. Prosecutors have emphasized that Kirk was targeted for his political expression. The presence of children among the witnesses has been cited as an aggravating factor.
