Trump Endorses Ciattarelli as Sherrill Triumphs in Competitive NJ Primaries

Former President Donald Trump made a decisive impact in New Jersey’s GOP primary by endorsing Jack Ciattarelli, whose candidacy shifted from critic to staunch supporter of Trump. With approximately 67% of the Republican vote, including support in all 21 counties, Ciattarelli easily won the nomination over Bill Spadea and Jon Bramnick.

Once a critic of Trump, Ciattarelli embraced the MAGA agenda, campaigning on conservative policies like income and property tax cuts, and cracking down on sanctuary cities. He credited Trump’s endorsement for his surge, framing his win as a mandate for “safer, more affordable New Jersey”.

On the Democratic side, Rep. Mikie Sherrill emerged from a competitive field—including Mayors Ras Baraka and Steven Fulop, representatives Josh Gottheimer and Sean Spiller—securing the nomination with around 35% of the vote. A former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill ran on a message of economic fairness and resisting Trump’s agenda.

Early voting numbers showed a strong Democratic turnout: over 330,000 ballots cast, compared to about 130,000 Republicans, suggesting heightened interest among Democrats leading into the fall election.

A notable shift among Latino voters emerged: Trump-backed support rising to 43%, up from 28% in 2020, especially in areas like Passaic County. Democrats responded by emphasizing economic issues rather than immigration to retain this demographic.

New Jersey’s 2025 governor’s race is one of two off-year gubernatorial contests (with Virginia), increasingly seen as a barometer of national political sentiment. Democrats are framing the race as a referendum on Trump, while Republicans stress local concerns like affordability and public safety.

This was New Jersey’s most expensive primary yet, with over $85 million spent, buoyed by outside investments and public financing—particularly on the Democratic side. A court-ordered change to the "county line" ballot, dismantling a key mechanism favoring party-backed candidates, played a significant role in shaping this outcome
