Tragic, Random Shooting at Austin Target Leaves Three Dead
On the afternoon of August 11, 2025, gunfire erupted in broad daylight at the Target parking lot on Research Boulevard in North Austin. The seemingly random attack began around 2:15 p.m. when 32-year-old Ethan Nieneker, armed with a handgun acquired from a family member, opened fire on innocent bystanders. He fatally shot 24-year-old Target employee Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca as the employee was gathering carts.
In a series of unthinkable events, Nieneker then targeted a family’s vehicle, killing 65-year-old Adam Chow and his 4-year-old granddaughter, Astrid. Chow’s wife suffered minor injuries in the assault. The entire incident was later described by Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis as an “unprovoked and deliberate attack” on unsuspecting people “in broad daylight”.
A Chaotic Flee and Pursuit Across the City
Immediately after the shootings, Nieneker fled the scene in the Chow family's Toyota 4-Runner. What followed was an alarming spree of violence and chaos across North and South Austin: he crashed the vehicle, assaulted multiple drivers, stole another car, and even attempted to break into a Waymo autonomous vehicle.
During his escape, Nieneker also vandalized the home of a bible study acquaintance by throwing a brick through its window. He was ultimately found roaming naked in a South Austin backyard, clutching a Bible and uttering disturbing declarations, including that he was Jesus. Officers used a Taser to subdue and arrest him around 3:06 p.m..
A Pattern of Trouble: Mental Health and Criminal History
Law enforcement revealed that Nieneker had a long record of run-ins with the law and documented mental health issues dating back to at least 2012. His criminal history includes domestic violence, DUI offenses, assaults, and other charges in both Travis and Williamson counties. Court documents show numerous incidents, including family violence and property damage.
Austin Police Chief Davis lamented, “There were some serious failures here,” pointing to systemic gaps in the handling of mental health concerns and access to firearms.
Families Mourn and Community Reacts
The victims—Target employee Hector Martinez Machuca, the loving grandfather Adam Chow, and his spirited granddaughter Astrid—came under public remembrance. Chow’s family shared, Astrid, who affectionately called her grandfather “GongGong,” brought joy with her singing and dancing, while Adam was the “heart and steady backbone” of their family.
Target’s statement expressed deep sorrow over the event, offering grief counseling to employees and pledging to work closely with authorities as they navigate this tragedy. Mayor Kirk Watson condemned the shooting as a “cowardly and sickening act of gun violence” amid the busy back-to-school season.
Looking Ahead: Investigation and Healing
Nieneker now faces multiple charges, including two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Adam Chow and Astrid, and a first-degree felony murder charge for Martinez Machuca’s killing. Additional charges related to his violent rampage may be filed as the investigation continues.
Authorities are probing how he obtained the handgun despite his criminal history. They have also encouraged the public to come forward with any video or photographic evidence to aid the ongoing investigation.
