Tom Bateman Stars Opposite Lili Reinhart in The Love Hypothesis

Amazon MGM Studios and MRC are bringing Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance The Love Hypothesis to the big screen, starring Lili Reinhart as PhD candidate Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as the enigmatic Professor Adam Carlsen. Directed by Claire Scanlon (Set It Up) with a script by Sarah Rothschild (The Sleepover), the film explores the chemistry and conflict brewing in a fake-dating experiment turned real. Filming is underway, with a release date yet to be revealed.

From Fan-Fic Roots to Rom-Com Revival

Published in 2021, Hazelwood’s novel first appeared online as Head Over Feet, a Star Wars fan-fiction inspired by the Reylo pairing (Rey and Kylo Ren). Its mainstream success—spending 10 months on the New York Times bestseller list and selling in 40 countries—set the stage for this adaptation.

A Delightfully Ironic Twist

In a nod to its origins, the film features Daisy Ridley’s real-life husband, Tom Bateman, playing the role based on Adam Driver’s character. Ridley even shared the news on Instagram, highlighting the meta twist. The couple first met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and married in 2023.
