A Fresh Take on Arctic Life: ‘North of North’

Imagine the furthest place north you’ve ever been—now go even further. That’s where Netflix’s upcoming comedy ‘North of North’ takes place! Created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, this fresh and funny series follows a young Inuk woman as she tries to rebuild her life in a tight-knit Arctic town where everyone knows your business.

Mark your calendars: The series premieres on April 10, 2025 on Netflix.

What Is ‘North of North’ About?

‘North of North’ tells the story of Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman determined to start anew after a dramatic and very public exit from her marriage. But in her small town of Ice Cove, Nunavut, moving on isn’t as easy as she hoped.

According to Lambe, Siaja starts the season “frantic and insecure” but quickly finds herself making big, life-changing decisions. Some work out, and some… don’t. The show follows her hilarious and heartfelt journey toward self-discovery.

Why ‘North of North’ Stands Out

Unlike other small-town comedies, ‘North of North’ brings an authentic Inuit perspective to the screen. Creators Aglok MacDonald and Arnaquq-Baril both live in the Arctic and wanted a show that truly reflected their community’s humor, traditions, and everyday challenges.

“We wanted to create something real for Inuit everywhere,” said Arnaquq-Baril. “A show that showcases the diversity of Nunavut’s communities, cultures, and languages.”

Where Was ‘North of North’ Filmed?

Though the fictional town of Ice Cove, Nunavut serves as the backdrop, the series was actually filmed in Iqaluit, the real capital of Nunavut.

For lead actress Anna Lambe, a proud Iqaluit native, filming in her hometown was an emotional experience. “The outpouring of love and support from the community was overwhelming,” she said. “It pushed us to make sure we represented Inuit culture in the best way possible.”

Who’s Behind ‘North of North’?

The series is helmed by an impressive team of Indigenous and female filmmakers:

  • Creators & Executive Producers: Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril
  • Executive Producers: Miranda de Pencier (Anne with an E), Anya Adams (Ginny & Georgia), Susan Coyne (Daisy Jones & The Six), and Garry Campbell (The Kids in the Hall)
  • Writers: Aglok MacDonald, Arnaquq-Baril, Kathryn Borel Jr., Linsey Stewart, Moriah Sallaffie, Aviaq Johnston, JP Larocque
  • Directors: Anya Adams, Aleysa Young (Baroness Von Sketch Show), Renuka Jeyapalan (Kim’s Convenience), Zoe Leigh Hopkins (Little Bird), and Danis Goulet (Night Raiders)

One standout fact? Every director on the series is a BIPOC woman, which is rare in the industry. Arnaquq-Baril shared a touching moment when young actress Keira Belle Cooper asked, “Why are all the bosses on this show women?” A proud and empowering milestone!
