Review

There is a Zombie Outside by Michael Varrati aims to revitalize the zombie subgenre by fusing humor and terror. The movie’s execution, though, is far from flawless.

The plot centers on a small town that is experiencing a zombie outbreak; however, rather than focusing on the typical undead carnage, the movie attempts, with varying degrees of success, to take a comedic approach. Ben Baur stars as Adam, a likable but underdeveloped protagonist who, alongside Phylicia Wissa’s Taryn, navigates the chaos. Danny Plotner’s Dylan adds a layer of humor, though the character’s antics often veer into the predictable.

Varrati’s script tries to strike a balance between the expectations of the horror genre and its comedic elements. Even though the movie occasionally veers into clichés, it lacks the edge necessary to make either genre aspect stand out, despite its occasional moments of true humor. Certain scenes seem to drag on while others move quickly through important plot points. The pacing is uneven.

Although passable, the performances do not improve the writing. Ben Baur and Phylicia Wissa are endearing in their parts, but the script falls short of giving them a gripping storyline. Tiffany Shepis and Francisco Chacin are among the supporting cast members who add to the comedy tone of the movie but do not make a lasting impression.

Visually, the movie uses some good, if not ground-breaking, special effects to make good use of its limited budget. The visually appealing background for the zombie antics is created by the thoughtful selection of the color scheme and aspect ratio (2.35:1). However, the film’s narrative and character development flaws cannot be made up for by the technical aspects alone.

There is a Zombie Outside is a funny take on the zombie genre, but it does not quite live up to expectations or stand out among the others. It is a lighthearted attempt that could amuse viewers searching for a funny zombie comedy, despite its flaws. This movie might not be quite right for those looking for a more sophisticated comedic tone or a more intense horror experience.
