Four factors led me to purchase the Galaxy Ring.

Since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Ring at its most recent Galaxy Unpacked event, there has been a lot of discussion over whether or not smart rings are ready to become widely used. The quick sellout of some Galaxy Ring variants in the United States served as evidence of the launch’s early success. This positive response indicates that wearable technology is becoming more popular than only fitness trackers and smartwatches.

Smart rings drew me in, so I placed a preorder for the Galaxy Ring and am looking forward to receiving my ring-sizing kit. Nonetheless, the Oura Ring, Samsung’s main rival in this market, has to be carefully considered and compared before making this choice. My selection of the Galaxy Ring over its competitor was influenced by a number of important criteria.

The fact that the Galaxy Ring did not require a subscription was one important aspect. One of Samsung’s main selling points was their decision to do away with any additional fees after the original purchase. Considering that the majority of the data collected by the Oura Ring is only accessible through a $6 monthly subscription charge, this decision has extra significance. Samsung’s choice to forego this kind of price was a calculated move to draw in users, as the idea of an extra recurrent cost could turn off a lot of prospective customers.

Although I could understand why a smaller company like Oura might need a subscription model to support its operations, the idea of paying Samsung—a much larger corporation an ongoing fee felt less justified. The lack of a subscription fee added to the appeal of the Galaxy Ring, demonstrating Samsung’s awareness of customer concerns and its commitment to providing value without additional costs.

Another compelling reason for my choice was the potential of the Galaxy Ring to serve as a partial substitute for a smartwatch in certain scenarios. While a smart ring cannot fully replace the comprehensive functionality of a smartwatch, it can effectively serve as an alternative for less demanding situations. For daily activities such as tracking steps, monitoring heart rate, and recording sleep, the Galaxy Ring appears to be a viable option. Its automatic detection and tracking of walking and running activities make it a practical device for everyday use. The possibility of using a smart ring instead of a bulky smartwatch, particularly for activities where a smartwatch might be inconvenient, was appealing. For instance, when not engaged in vigorous activities or when simply going through a regular day, the Galaxy Ring could provide sufficient tracking and monitoring capabilities. This flexibility allows me to enjoy the benefits of a smart ring without being tethered to a smartwatch, especially during times when wearing a smartwatch might be less desirable.

The size and weight of the Galaxy Ring also played a crucial role in my decision. The Galaxy Ring is notably smaller and lighter compared to the Oura Ring. While the difference in weight might seem marginal, it has a significant impact on comfort, particularly for someone who is not accustomed to wearing rings. Personally, I have never been a regular ring wearer, and the prospect of adjusting to a new accessory was a concern. A lighter and more comfortable ring was likely to facilitate this transition. Although the Oura Ring is not inherently uncomfortable, the Galaxy Ring’s reduced size and weight made it a more attractive option for me. The ease of wearing a lighter ring could make the adjustment period more manageable, enhancing the overall experience.

The data-sharing capabilities of the Galaxy Ring were another important consideration. My reliance on health data for purposes such as tracking insurance premiums made it crucial for me that the device integrates well with other services. The Galaxy Ring’s compatibility with Samsung Health, which enables comprehensive data sharing, was a significant advantage. This feature ensures that all my health metrics are accurately recorded and shared, which is essential for maintaining my insurance benefits. While the Oura Ring does offer integration with Google Fit, it only provides basic data like exercise, weight, and height.

The Galaxy Ring’s ability to offer a more extensive range of data and integrate seamlessly with Samsung Health made it a more suitable choice for my needs. The assurance that my health data would be consistently recorded and shared was a decisive factor in my preference for the Galaxy Ring.

I had some concerns when I decided to go with the Galaxy Ring even with these benefits. The possible absence of regular updates and support was a major worry. Over time, the Oura Ring has consistently added value by releasing updates and enhancements. On the other hand, Samsung has less track record with more recent product categories, such as smart rings. It worried me that Samsung would come up with a newer model soon after I bought the Galaxy Ring, or that it would become old rapidly.

One thing that troubled me was thinking about spending $400 on a device that might not last long or be discontinued. It was my hope that Samsung will continue to maintain and update the Galaxy Ring in order to keep it current and useful. While I waited for my new smart ring to arrive, I was cautiously optimistic about potential upgrades and functionality enhancements.

A number of variables, including the lack of a membership cost, the possibility of replacing my smartwatch in part, the smaller and lighter design, and the powerful data-sharing capabilities, all played a role in my choice to buy the Galaxy Ring. Though I’m still enthusiastic about the Galaxy Ring and its possible advantages, I’m cautiously optimistic due to the lack of information about upgrades and long-term maintenance. Weighing the benefits against any potential downsides helped us decide on the Galaxy Ring over the Oura Ring. I’m still holding out hope that my Galaxy Ring will live up to my expectations and end up being a useful addition to my collection of wearable gadgets.
