AI extinction, Simultaneous failures of ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, after experiencing a prolonged outage in the early hours of the morning, encountered another disruption, marking the second instance of downtime. This time, however, it wasn’t alone in facing technical difficulties. On Tuesday morning, both Anthropic’s Claude and Perplexity also encountered issues, albeit these were swiftly resolved compared to ChatGPT’s prolonged downtime.

While Google’s Gemini appears to be operational at present, there are reports from some users suggesting it might have experienced a brief outage as well. The simultaneous downtime of three major AI providers raises concerns about a potential broader infrastructure issue or an internet-scale problem, akin to the disruptions that sometimes affect multiple social media platforms concurrently.

During ChatGPT’s outage, its landing page exhibited a malfunction, rendering users unable to message the AI chatbot. The outage persisted for several hours, beginning around 7:33 AM PT and concluding approximately at 10:17 AM PT, constituting another multi-hour disruption. At one juncture during the outage, ChatGPT’s website was updated to indicate that the service had reached capacity, conveyed amusingly in pirate speak, and offered to notify users upon restoration of services.

Claude’s website similarly encountered errors, displaying a message indicating server component render issues and advising users to “try again.” The service resumed operation sometime after 12:10 PM ET. Perplexity’s website also faced capacity-related challenges, displaying an over-capacity message and assuring users of a swift return. The site intermittently resumed functionality following Claude’s restoration but continued to experience sporadic outages thereafter.

Notably, ChatGPT had only recently resolved a protracted outage that affected its service overnight. The chatbot’s downtime during the early morning hours (Pacific Time) prompted widespread complaints across various platforms. OpenAI’s status page indicated ongoing bug fixes and issue monitoring around 12:21 AM PT.

As of 7:33 AM PT, the status page updated to indicate ChatGPT’s unavailability for some users, with OpenAI actively investigating the issue. The chatbot remained offline as of 12:28 PM ET, flagged as a “major outage” on its status page. The technical issues were eventually rectified several hours later.

Requests for comment or additional information from the AI providers regarding the outages remained unanswered at the time of reporting, although updates are expected as more details emerge.

In addition to the AI disruptions, Forbes reported on a zero-day spam attack affecting select celebrity and brand accounts on TikTok, including notable figures like Paris Hilton and CNN, adding to the flurry of online disruptions currently unfolding.

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), reliability and uptime are paramount. However, the recent incidents involving OpenAI’s ChatGPT, alongside Anthropic’s Claude and Perplexity, have highlighted a concerning trend of technical disruptions. While such occurrences are not unprecedented in the tech world, the simultaneous downtime of three major AI providers raises red flags about the robustness of their infrastructure and the potential for broader internet-scale issues.

The outage experienced by ChatGPT, in particular, garnered significant attention due to its duration and impact. Beginning in the early hours of the morning and lasting for several hours, users were unable to access the AI chatbot, leading to frustration and inconvenience. This downtime not only disrupted individual interactions but also had implications for businesses and organizations relying on AI-powered solutions for various tasks.

The landing page of ChatGPT during the outage served as a visible indicator of the disruption, with users encountering error messages and an inability to engage with the chatbot. The situation was exacerbated by the lack of clear communication regarding the cause of the outage and the expected resolution time, leaving users in limbo and exacerbating their frustration.

Interestingly, the outage coincided with similar issues faced by Anthropic’s Claude and Perplexity, suggesting a potential systemic issue within the AI ecosystem. While these disruptions were resolved relatively quickly compared to ChatGPT’s prolonged downtime, they nonetheless underscored the vulnerability of AI systems to technical glitches and the importance of robust infrastructure and contingency plans.

Speculation regarding the root cause of the outages abounds, with some pointing to the possibility of a broader infrastructure issue or internet-scale problem affecting multiple AI providers simultaneously. Alternatively, the surge in traffic resulting from ChatGPT’s outage may have overwhelmed the servers of Claude and Perplexity, leading to their own brief disruptions.
